More Than Raiders’ Pride Hurt; Hayes Out With a Broken Foot

The Seattle Seahawks’ hits just keep happening. The Raiders, who first feared they had lost wide receiver Dokie Williams to a knee injury, learned Wednesday that they have, in fact, lost cornerback Lester Hayes, who has a broken bone in his left foot.

The Raiders placed Hayes on injured reserve, which means he must sit out for four weeks. Unless the Raiders get into the playoffs, and go two games deep into them, this will end his season.

Hayes said he has been getting injections of xylocaine, a pain-killer, all season for a hamstring pull, and had started getting injections for the foot after hurting it three weeks ago in San Diego.

“I’ve had 150 cc of xylocaine in the past 11 games for the hamstring,” he said. “I just got over that and then this happened. I took two shots for it Monday night without getting it numb, so I took a third injection.

“I thought it broke in the first quarter. I was cutting on it and I felt it pop. It started making a clicking noise.

“It’s probably going to take four weeks to heal.”

To take Hayes’ place, the Raiders re-signed wide receiver Mark Pattison. The Raiders’ first said they’d put rookie defensive end Mike Wise on injured reserve because of an elbow injury, but later decided just to put him in the injured list.

Also, Chris Riehm, a first-year player, will start at left guard in place of Charley Hannah, who has a broken bone in his right hand. Riehm had to relieve Hannah at Seattle.

Finally, Jim Plunkett, who has a strained right arch, didn’t practice Wednesday. The Raiders are still hoping he’ll start Sunday.
