El Segundo : Dog License Fees to Rise

Share

The City Council this week voted to raise dog licensing fees by $2.50 to help cover the cost of picking up and caring for stray dogs.

Beginning Feb. 6, dog licensing fees will rise to $15 from $12.50 per year, and to $7.50 from $5 a year for spayed or neutered dogs. Even with the increase, El Segundo has the lowest licensing fees in the South Bay, city spokeswoman Eileen Hunter said.

The new fee schedule will account for about 73% of El Segundo’s $26,959 animal control budget. The rest comes from the city’s general operating fund. Officials at the Southern California Humane Society, which contracts with the city for animal control services, could not cite an exact figure but said the number of stray dogs captured in El Segundo has increased in the last two years.
