An Encino man was in intensive care Tuesday with wounds from a shotgun blast fired through the door of his apartment, Los Angeles police said. Investigators later recovered explosives and more than $10,000 in cash from the apartment, Detective Paul Stewart said.

The Monday night shooting in the 5400 block of Yarmouth Avenue left Steven Moshlak, 30, with a shotgun pellet wounds to the chest and left arm. Moshlak was in serious condition at Northridge Hospital Medical Center on Tuesday, Stewart said.

Moshlak was shot as he opened the door to his apartment, Stewart said. He saw a man with a shotgun and tried to shut the door, but was hit by the blast, the detective said.

Officer Herb Williams, a bomb technician, said the explosives included 40 seal bombs--generally used by fishing boats to scare off seals--and firecrackers. Moshlak will not be arrested for possessing the explosives, Williams said.

The motive for the attack is unknown and the investigation is continuing, Stewart said.
