Celtic forward Larry Bird, the perennial National Basketball Assn. all-star and last season’s most valuable player, has been chosen The Boston Herald’s first Boston Athlete of the Year, the newspaper said.

Herald readers picked Bird overwhelmingly over second-place finisher Roger Clemens, the Red Sox pitcher who this year won the Cy Young Award and was named the American League’s most valuable player.
