Late Cleveland Rally Beats Calabasas, 65-63
Senior guard Andre Anderson made three of four free throws in the final 32 seconds to seal Cleveland’s 65-63 victory over Calabasas Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the Chaminade tournament.
Cleveland, ranked No. 1 in the Valley by The Times, trailed, 63-56, with two minutes left before outscoring Calabasas the rest of the way, 9-0.
Anderson hit a jumper and junior forward Damon Charlott added a tip-in and, after stealing an inbounds pass, scored on a layup to cut the Cleveland deficit to 63-62 with 1:34 remaining.
A steal by Richard Branham then led to two free throws by Anderson with 32 seconds left, giving Cleveland (7-0) a 64-63 lead. Anderson, who led the Cavaliers with 25 points, made another free throw--following another Calabasas turnover--with four seconds left.
Calabasas (8-5) trailed, 44-31, midway through the third quarter before outscoring Cleveland, 10-2. A jumper by Steve Ward, who led Calabasas with 27 points and 11 rebounds, cut the deficit to 46-41. A free throw by Kevin Menteer of Calabasas with no time left in the quarter made it 48-44.
With 4:40 remaining, three consecutive baskets by Cory Marschalk cut the Cavaliers’ lead to 52-50. Ward’s two free throws tied it at 52 with 4:23 left.
An offensive rebound and basket by Jon Drezner gave Calabasas its first lead, 56-54, with four minutes left.
Another fast-break basket by Marschalk with 3:28 left increased the Coyotes’ lead to 58-54.
Calabasas continued to increase its lead until Ward’s follow shot with 2:04 left made it 63-56.
