Share

Kearny High School’s basketball team, in what Coach Bill Peterson called “a parade to the free-throw line,” beat CETYS of Tijuana, 89-81, in a first-round game of the Bonita Vista Optimist Tournament.

Seven players, including three from Kearny, fouled out in the game.

“There was not much defense played, which is why I’m pretty mad with my players,” Peterson said.

Kearny, which normally plays a ball-control style, was led by forward Randy Robinson’s 21 points. Guard Tim Garlin scored 20 points and guard Dion Osborne added 19 for Kearny (7-2).

Trailing 48-36 at the half, CETYS outscored Kearny 25-13 in the third quarter to tie the score. But the Komets, regarded as one of the top 2-A teams this season, rallied in the final period.

“I’d rather play a 56-45 ball game,” Peterson said.
