Some high clouds may streak the skies today, but otherwise fair weather is expected to greet the New Year.

And with temperatures in the 60s and 70s, the mostly sunny weather is expected to last at least until Saturday throughout the county.

Northern storms approaching San Diego have been blocked by a high-pressure system off Southern California. The high pressures are weakening, however, forecasters said, and some clouds will move in as a result.

Forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said a storm now developing west of Hawaii may move into the county Sunday and advised that outdoor activities be scheduled according to the latest forecast.

“We could have some surprises Sunday. We have to keep a watch for rain,” he said.

On the coast, tides will gradually decrease after an 18-year high tide of 7.8 feet Wednesday. High tide will be 7.6 feet at 9:30 a.m. today and 7.1 feet at 10:19 a.m. Friday.

Surf should be 3 to 5 feet at 14-second intervals.

Some morning fog is expected at the beach today with temperatures in the 60s and winds from 10 to 15 m.p.h.

Coastal strip highs are expected to be in the mid-60s to low 70s with nighttime lows in the 40s. Inland highs expected to be in the 68- to 75-degree range will drop to the mid-30s to mid-40s at night today and Friday.

Mountain highs in the 45- to 55-degree range will cool to the 20s and 30s and desert highs are expected to be in the high 60s to mid-70s. Lows may dip to 38 both days in the desert.
