WINTER SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Master’s Women Fall to Point Loma, 54-52

The Master’s College women’s basketball team fell just short against Point Loma in a 54-52 nonconference loss Saturday night at home.

Kelly Pattison led Master’s (3-8) with 14 points with Michele Rowell adding 10 and Shelmarie Tatum 9. Master’s shot only 28% to Point Loma’s 45%.

The Mustangs committed 28 fouls and Michelle Spink and Carman Javaux fouled out. Point Loma (6-5) committed 20 fouls and received two technicals. Point Loma’s Laura Mars led all scorers with 24 points.

Master’s shot well from the line in the second half and converted on 67% of its free throws for the game. Point Loma managed only 55%.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Moorpark 63, Cuesta 50--Former Royal High standout Karina Hardman scored a game-high 26 points in the Western State Conference game. Debra Rabin and Carol Kellick, who also graduated from Royal, combined for 22 points for Moorpark (10-9, 2-1 in conference). Cuesta is 7-8 and 0-2 in conference.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Harvard 55, La Salle 40--Mike Lowe scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds for Harvard in the Santa Fe League victory at Harvard. Steve Green added nine points for the Saracens, who led 26-19 at halftime.

Montclair Prep 40, L.A. Baptist 33--Craig Handshu made two free throws in the final minute to help lift Montclair Prep to an Alpha League win.

Montclair Prep (3-0 in league, 6-6 overall) led by four points with 1:20 left in the game when Dave Sanger blocked a layup attempt and Handshu sank the foul shots.

Chaminade 68, St. Genevieve 36--Kevin Black scored 17 points and had 9 rebounds and Scott Stuber added 12 points and 11 rebounds as host Chaminade cruised to an easy Santa Fe League win.

Chaminade (3-0 in league, 6-5 overall) held St. Genevieve (1-2, 5-6) to two first-half field goals as it jumped to a 27-12 halftime lead.

Viewpoint 55, Highland Hall 46--Paul Burke scored 15 points and had 9 rebounds as Viewpoint scored a nonleague victory at Chatsworth Park.

Viewpoint (4-5), which led by as many as 15 points, also got 14 points from Andy Telanoff and 13 points and 10 rebounds from Chuck Sakai. Highland Hall (1-5) was led by Dax Tobin and Wes Parrish, who scored 15 and 13 points, respectively.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

L.A. Baptist 47, Montclair Prep 32--Dawn Broline scored 16 points and handed out 9 assists as L.A. Baptist scored its third Alpha League win without a loss.

L.A. Baptist, which improved its overall mark to 9-2, also got 15 points from Kendra Frazier and 10 from Sheri Harris. Montclair Prep (0-3 in league, 3-5) was led by Charis Kubrin, who scored 12 points.

Oak Park 52, St. Bonaventure 35--Paula Fraley scored 20 points and had 15 rebounds for Oak Park (2-1, 6-3 overall) in the Tri-Valley League victory.

Oak Park led 23-20 at halftime and outscored St. Bonaventure 17-6 in the fourth quarter when Sharon Carson scored 8 of her 13 points. Carson also had 10 rebounds and teammate Wendy Wootton added 10 points. St. Bonaventure is 1-2 in league.

L.A. Lutheran 47, Western Christian 36--Peri Booth scored a game-high 17 points and April Otte had 17 rebounds as L.A. Lutheran (4-6, 2-1) handed Western Christian its third consecutive Alpha League loss. Char Rector had 10 points for Western Christian.

Holy Martyrs 67, Yeshiva 21-- Ayline Amirayan scored 24 points and had 5 assists as Holy Martyrs scored a Liberty League win at Yeshiva.

Holy Martyrs (2-0 in league, 8-1 overall), which jumped to an early lead, also got 8 points and 12 rebounds from Dalia Gezenian. Yeshiva is 0-2, 0-5 overall.

BOYS SOCCER

Alemany 1, St. John Bosco 1--Senior center-halfback Grant Runnerstrom gave Alemany an early 1-0 lead when he scored at the 15-minute mark. St. John Bosco tied the game five minutes into the second half. Alemany is 4-5-1 and 1-1-1 in Del Rey League play. League favorite Bosco is 2-0-1.

Montclair Prep 2, L.A. Baptist 0--Jay Goldberg and Adam Fishman scored second-half goals as Montclair Prep handed host L.A. Baptist only its second Alpha League loss in four years.

Montclair Prep (1-0-1, 6-1-1), used the strong defensive efforts of P.C. Shaw and Chad Calabria to help goalie Alain Kalchein score his second straight shutout. L.A. Baptist is 1-1 in league, 4-7 overall.
