Hawthorne : Drug Program Started

Wiseburn School District, with help from the Hawthorne Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, is beginning an anti-drug program for fourth- through eighth-graders at its three schools.

The SANE (Substance Abuse and Narcotics Education) program is designed to teach children decision-making and coping skills, said Supt. Arthur Margolese. The program seeks to provide students with information about drugs and help them enhance their self-images so they can deal with peer pressure.

Margolese said the program will become a permanent part of the district’s health and safety curriculum.

The district will spend $12,000 on curriculum and teacher training at Dana Intermediate, Anza and Cabrillo schools. The sheriff and police departments will provide a deputy and a police officer for the program. The district includes territory patrolled by both agencies.
