School Chief to Urge That District Impose Fees on New Development
The superintendent of the Glendale Unified School District said he will recommend that the school board impose state-sanctioned building fees on new homes and commercial developments.
The board is expected Tuesday to discuss whether it wants to take advantage of a new state law allowing school districts to assess up to $1.50 a square foot on newly built or newly remodeled residences and up to 25 cents a square foot on commercial development.
Supt. of Schools Robert A. Sanchis said the fees, if approved, will be used to renovate school facilities, some of which date from the 1920s.
He said the Glendale Board of Education will hold two public hearings, probably in February and March, before making a decision.
James Pollard, a Glendale contractor and spokesman for the Building Industry Assn. of Southern California, declined to comment on the proposed fees until he could study the law.
Most school districts statewide are expected to implement the fees. Some, such as the Los Angeles Unified School District and the La Canada Unified School District, have already done so.
Sanchis said he had no estimate of how much annual revenue such fees would generate.
