A California State University, Northridge student has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $70,000 from the safe of a dairy farmer in New Hampshire, authorities said Thursday.
Colin Walter Conway, 21, was arrested by Los Angeles police on Wednesday at a Van Nuys motel where he was staying, Sgt. Paul Mattson said.
Conway and a friend from New Hampshire, Jeffrey G. Sibulkin, 20, “forcibly opened” the farmer’s safe and took $70,000 to $84,000, said Detective John Scarinza of the New Hampshire State Police.
The theft occurred on Jan. 8 in Coelbrook, N.H., just south of the Canadian border, when Conway was visiting his family in New Hampshire, Mattson said.
Mattson described the victim as an “old-time dairy farmer known not to trust banks with his life savings.”
New Hampshire police later arrested Sibulkin and issued a fugitive warrant for Conway.
Mattson said that $31,000 was recovered from Conway after a stakeout at the motel in the 9200 block of Sepulveda Boulevard.
Conway was being held Thursday by Los Angeles police for extradition to New Hampshire.
