WCAC Roundup : San Diego Beats USF, Shares Lead

Nils Madden collected 23 points and 12 rebounds Saturday night to lead the University of San Diego to a 68-56 victory over the University of San Francisco in a West Coast Athletic Conference game at San Diego.

Madden hit 10 of 12 shots as the Toreros, 12-4 overall and 3-1 in the WCAC, moved into a tie with Gonzaga for the conference lead.

San Diego led, 35-27, at halftime but the Dons (12-5, 2-2) closed to within 54-51 on Anthony Mann’s jumper with 5:31 left. However, the Toreros reeled off seven straight points to take a 61-51 lead.

Scott Thompson added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Paul Leonard had 11 points and 6 assists for the Toreros. Mann had 15 points and Pat Giusti added 12 for the Dons.

Santa Clara 55, St. Mary’s 43--Dan Weiss scored 19 points to lead the Broncos past the Gaels in a WCAC game at Moraga.

The Broncos (11-7, 2-2) broke out of a tie with 11:55 left by scoring nine straight points to take a 42-33 lead.

St. Mary’s (10-8, 1-3), which had a 25-22 halftime lead, managed to narrow the gap to five points, but the Broncos made their free throws in the stretch to hand the Gaels their first home defeat of the season.

Paul Robertson scored 20 points for St. Mary’s and Chris Lane added 12 for Santa Clara.
