3-Mile Section of Beach Bike Trail to Be Constructed

Share

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved construction of a three-mile beach bicycle trail between Alamitos Avenue and 54th Place.

The trail, expected to be built during August, will cost $1.5 million in state funds, said Art Andrew, project engineer and a senior architectural engineer for the city’s Public Works Department. The concrete trail will be 17 feet wide and have three lanes, two for bicycle riders and one for pedestrians, Andrew said.

Bicyclists have advocated building the trail since 1979, and the project received official support from the City Council at a meeting in September, 1985. The Long Beach bicycle trail is a missing link in a network of bikeways that stretch from Santa Monica to Newport Beach.
