An unidentified transient was killed Wednesday when he was struck by a Southern Pacific freight while walking on the tracks, Burbank police said.

Both the man and train were eastbound when the accident occurred at 8:15 a.m. near Buena Vista and Vanowen streets, Sgt. Don Goldberg said. The man ignored warning signals from the train, which was going 30 m.p.h., and continued walking, he said.

The train’s brakes were applied, but it could not stop before reaching the victim, Goldberg said.
