Part of a parking lot at the scenic overlook of Sunset Cliffs caved in Thursday and the site was sealed off at once by city workers.
A city inspector discovered the damage at 11 a.m. and officials believe it had happened within an hour. No injuries were reported and no cars were damaged.
Art Belenzon, district manager of San Diego beach maintenance, said city crews immediately closed the parking lot and another lot just north of where the slide took place.
Officials attributed the cave-in to the unstable cliffs and recent bad weather, Belenzon said. Signs have long been posted around the area warning visitors about the unstable ground.
Engineers and city planners will examine the area to determine the precise cause of the slide.
