The St. Louis Cardinals signed center fielder Willie McGee to a one-year, $700,000 contract. McGee, the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1985, reportedly had sought an $800,000 deal, and the team originally had offered $650,000. The agreement negated an arbitration hearing that would have been held next month.
