Bellflower : Funds for Child Care Center
Somerset Continuation High School Principal Joseph Stits has rallied City Council support for a proposed infant care center at the school that will be funded by the city and the Bellflower Unified School District.
In a 3-2 vote, with Councilmen Joseph Cvetko and Michael Brassard dissenting, the council agreed to contribute $15,000 toward construction of the center, which will serve students who need a place to leave their children while attending classes. Construction is estimated to cost $40,000, Stits said.
“Our next step is to go to the (school) board and ask them to provide at least $15,000, and Somerset will put in the rest,” Stits said. “We have the site picked out and the teacher is ready to go. We just need the funding.”
Brassard said he supports the program but is concerned about the cost. “I think the program has its merits, but we have not budgeted for it,” he said. “If Mr. Stits wants funding he should come back at budget time.”
Stits said he will request funding from the district at the Feb. 5 school board meeting.
