Share

A San Fernando woman was charged Wednesday with felony child molestation involving a 12-year-old boy in her care.

Sophia Moran Munoz, 37, who is believed to be visiting in Mexico, was charged with two counts of child molestation in a warrant filed in San Fernando Superior Court. Munoz was also accused of two special allegations: that the molestations involved substantial sexual conduct and that they occurred while she was in a position of trust as the boy’s guardian.

If convicted, she could face up to 16 years in prison. If the special allegations are found to be true, she would be ineligible for probation.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Kenneth A. Loveman said the boy told police that two incidents of sexual intercourse occurred during the summer while the woman’s husband was at work. The boy, who has since moved out of the area to live with an aunt, reported the incidents to the aunt in December after Munoz suggested that he move back in with her, investigators said.

The boy’s parents live in Mexico, investigators said.
