Executives of the Dupont Plaza Hotel, where 96 people died in a New Year’s Eve arson fire, announced that the building will be closed while tests are conducted to see if the fire released particles of cancer-causing asbestos. Samples taken from the building’s lobby and casino tested positive for asbestos, hotel Vice President Bruce Shulman said. The particles would pose a potential threat to workers and investigators and could affect residents of the area in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the 20-story hotel was built in the early 1960s, when asbestos was widely.
