Pepperdine found plenty of ways to help St. Mary’s to a 67-63 victory over the Waves Thursday night in a West Coast Athletic Conference game at Moraga, Calif.
The Waves, 7-12 overall and 2-4 in the WCAC, rallied from a 16-point deficit to within 63-61 on a three-point shot by Craig Davis with 11 seconds left and immediately called time out. The only trouble was, Pepperdine didn’t have any timeouts left and was assessed a two-shot technical foul.
Robert Haugen, who scored 19 points for St. Mary’s (12-9, 3-4), made both free throws, and Dan Curry, who also had 19, added two more free throws before the finish to seal the victory.
Pepperdine had a 25-24 halftime lead, but made just 1 of 12 shots in the first 8 1/2 minutes of the second half, allowing the Gaels to go on a 20-3 surge for a 44-28 lead. Robertson scored eight points, including two 3-pointers, in the run for the Gaels.
The only basket for Pepperdine during that stretch was a three-point basket by Ed Allen with 17:11 remaining.
Eric White scored 26 points for the Waves.
