The AFC champion Denver Broncos will open their 1987 preseason schedule Aug. 15 against the Green Bay Packers in a charity game at Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium, organizers announced.

The Broncos lost, 39-20, to the New York Giants in last Sunday’s Super Bowl in Pasadena.

Denver General Manager John Beake said the exhibition will be considered one of his club’s three preseason home games. It also will be the Packers’ preseason opener.

The night game originally was scheduled to be played at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, but backers could not come up with the money to guarantee it.

Denver has several former University of Arizona players on its roster, including wide receiver Vance Johnson, linebacker Ricky Hunley and cornerback Randy Robbins.

Both the Packers and Broncos reportedly have agreed to contribute $25,000 to a charity which has yet to be determined.

The game will be sponsored by Arizona NFL Expansion Franchise Ltd.--a Phoenix-based group trying to land a team here. Two of the group’s main members are Hall of Famer Bart Starr, who is a former Green Bay quarterback and coach, and Joe Foss, the former commissioner of the old American Football League.

The Baltimore Colts and Atlanta Falcons played in the last NFL exhibition game at 70,021-seat Sun Devil Stadium in August 1982.
