College Basketball Roundup : St. John’s Beats Georgetown in Overtime

Guard Mark Jackson scored a career-high 34 points, including 4 in overtime, to lift 19th-ranked St. John’s to a 67-65 Big East victory over No. 10 Georgetown at New York’s Madison Square Garden Monday night.

In avenging a 60-46 loss to the Hoyas at the Capital Centre in Landover, Md., on Jan. 7, the Redmen outscored Georgetown, 4-2, in the extra period with Jackson hitting both baskets, including the winner with 52 seconds left.

Jackson, a 6-foot-3 inch senior, also knocked the ball from Reggie Williams’ hands and out of bounds with two seconds to go in overtime.

St. John’s (15-4, 6-4) held a 63-60 lead before Jaren Jackson sank a three-point basket with 15 seconds remaining to force the overtime.

Mark Jackson put the Redmen back in front, 65-63, with a jump shot with 1:54 left in overtime. Williams responded with a jumper to tie the score, and Jackson then hit the game-winning jumper.

Willie Glass missed a free throw with 14 seconds left for St. John’s.

Williams led the Hoyas (15-4, 5-4) with 26 points. Perry McDonald had 14, and Mark Tillmon finished with 10. Shelton Jones had 13 for the Redmen.

Navy 76, East Carolina 60--David Robinson scored 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Midshipmen to a Colonial Athletic Assn. victory over the Pirates at Greenville, N.C.

Doug Wojcik finished with 16 points for Navy (15-5, 8-1).

Lou Edwards led East Carolina (11-11, 3-6) with 19 points, and Marchell Henry added 16.

Illinois 82, Ohio State 65--Forward Lowell Hamilton scored 23 points as the 14th-ranked Illini rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat the Buckeyes in a Big Ten game at Columbus, Ohio.

Tony Wysinger added 15 points, and Ken Norman and Doug Altenberger each scored 14 for the Illini (16-5, 6-3).

Ohio State (13-8, 4-5) was led by Dennis Hopson with 21 points.

DePaul 84, North Carolina State 62--Rod Strickland scored 18 points as the fifth-ranked Blue Demons handed the Wolfpack their worst loss of the season, at Rosemont, Ill.

Stanley Brundy, the former Crenshaw High star, came off the bench to score 16 points for DePaul (19-1), and Terence Greene added 15, Dallas Comegys 14 and Kevin Edwards 10.

Bennie Bolton and Walker Lambiotte each scored 13 points for the Wolfpack (12-8).

Duke 62, Stetson 59--Junior guard Kevin Strickland hit two free throws with three seconds left as the 16th-ranked Blue Devils held off the Hatters at Durham, N.C.

Strickland made the free throws after he rebounded a desperation 40-footer by Stetson’s Gary Coachman and was fouled by Randy Anderson.

Danny Ferry led Duke (17-4) with 16 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 2:40 to play.

Center Jimmy Kuhl led the Hatters (8-10) with 18 points, and Anderson added 15.

Temple 72, Massachusetts 59--Senior guard Nate Blackwell scored 27 points to lead the sixth-ranked Owls to an Atlantic 10 Conference victory over the Minutemen at Amherst, Mass.

Massachusetts pulled within 46-44 with 10:02 left when Carl Smith hit a three-point shot while being fouled and then converted the free throw, as well.

However, Temple sophomore Mike Vreeswyk, who finished with 12 points, scored 10 points in the final 10 minutes to help the Owls (21-2, 10-0) pull away.

Howard Evans added 13 points for Temple. Smith and Lorenzo Sutton led Massachusetts (8-12, 4-8) with 16 points each, while David Brown added 13.

Southern Mississippi 84, Memphis State 77--Randolph Keys scored 19 points and teammate John White added 17 as the Golden Eagles beat the Tigers in a Metro Conference game at Memphis, Tenn.

It was the first time that Southern Mississippi (15-6, 4-3) had beaten Memphis State since 1981. Memphis State is tied with Louisville for the conference lead.

Marvin Alexander led Memphis State (18-6, 4-2) with 21 points, and Sylvester Gray added 16.

Florida State 77, Cincinnati 75--LaRae Davis scored 22 points and Jerome Fitchett added 18 as the Seminoles held off a late Bearcat rally in a Metro Conference game at Tallahassee, Fla.

Cincinnati came back from a 16-point deficit midway through the final half and closed within 76-75 on Roger McClendon’s three-point field goal with one second left.

Cincinnati then was assessed a technical foul for calling a timeout it didn’t have. Fitchett hit on one of two free throws for the final victory margin for the Seminoles (12-7, 2-5).

McClendon led Cincinnati (10-10, 2-5) with 22 points. The 6-4 junior guard hit on 9 of 14 field goal tries including 3 of 5 shots from three-point range.

Mississippi 71, Tennessee 70-- Sophomore guard Keith Kessinger hit a three-point basket with two seconds left as the Rebels edged the Volunteers in a Southeastern Conference game at Oxford, Miss.

It was the Rebels’ second win over the Volunteers in the last three days. They downed Tennessee, 73-70, Saturday night in Knoxville.

Tony White led Tennessee (9-10, 3-7) with 27 points, including 17 in the second half. Elvin Brown added 21, while Doug Roth scored 10.

Ronnie Sims scored 23 points to lead Ole Miss (12-7, 5-5).
