An argument between two men--apparently a student and an instructor--led to the shooting deaths of two men in a building at California State University, Northridge, Los Angeles police said.

The names of the victims were withheld.

A 35-year-old man believed to be a computer science professor died at Northridge Hospital Medical Center of a head wound, police said. The other man was found dead at the shooting scene.

Police said they did not know which of the men did the shooting, but that an automatic pistol was found near the body of the dead man, believed to be a student. A knapsack and three shell casings were found nearby.

The shooting occurred about 7 p.m. in a stairwell between the third and fourth floors of the School of Engineering and Computer Science, police said.

Student Larry Klein, 20, said he was in a third-floor classroom when he heard gunshots coming from the stairwell.

“We heard a scream. There were several shots,” he said. “There was someone who was running down the hallway yelling, ‘Call security. Someone with a gun. Someone’s been shot.’ ”

Then one of the students closed the classroom door, Klein said.
