High School Basketball : Sundevils Defeat Falcons

Share

Mike Wasserburger set a San Diego Section record by making 21 free throws, but his four straight with two seconds left provided the difference as the Mount Carmel High School boy’s basketball team defeated Torrey Pines, 67-64, Wednesday night at Torrey Pines.

Wasserburger’s 21 free throws (out of 22 attempts) bested the record of 14 set by three players, most recently by Michael Pitts of Sweetwater in 1979.

Wasserburger made both ends of a one-and-one and two technical shots as the Sundevils (7-1, 16-3) remained a half game ahead of San Dieguito in the Palomar League.

With Mount Carmel leading, 63-62, it appeared that Kevin Friel’s 18-footer had apparently won the game for the Falcons. Friel’s shot was not allowed, however, because his brother, Kerth, was called for a foul before the shot.

As the teams walked the length of the floor to shoot the one-and-one, a fight broke out and two players were ejected. Wasserburger made his free throws and Mike Radcliff made two for Torrey Pines for the final score.

Wasserburger led all scorers with 27 points. Kevin Flanagan and Mike Radcliff had 15 points each for Torrey Pines (5-3, 15-6).
