Cardinal Will Officiate at San Juan Dedication

Share

Cardinal Timothy Manning, retired archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, will preside over 11 a.m. ceremonies on Sunday dedicating the new parish church at Mission San Juan Capistrano. The cardinal will also deliver the sermon.

The new seven-domed Church of St. John of Capistrano, on which construction was begun in 1982, resembles the original stone church that was destroyed in an earthquake in 1812. The new church is larger than the original building but was built in the spirit and likeness of the original church. Many special artistic touches were designed to give it the mission atmosphere of the original church, including textured plaster walls, ceramic tile patterns and artworks copied from original fragments of patterns in the old church.

Father Paul Martin is the resident pastor of St. John’s. The master of ceremonies at the Sunday services will be Father Arthur Holquin, director of music and liturgy for the Diocese of Orange. For more information call (714) 493-1424.
