Road Show Continues for Irvine Tonight With a PCAA Game Against Utah State

The travels of UC Irvine’s basketball team have taken the Anteaters to the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.’s farthest outpost, Utah State, as the quest for victory on the road continues.

After dropping to 2-8 in away games with Thursday’s 95-70 embarrassment at San Jose State, Irvine plays tonight at 6:30 (PST) at Utah State’s Spectrum, usually a friendly port for the Anteaters. In six seasons under Coach Bill Mulligan, Irvine is 5-1 at Logan.

“It’ll be nice to go to Logan,” Mulligan said after watching his team commit a season-high 30 turnovers while shooting 36% from the field against San Jose. The loss, Irvine’s third straight on the road, left the Anteaters in fourth place in the PCAA at 6-6. Overall, Irvine is 11-10.

Utah State (11-12, 4-7) played host to Nevada Las Vegas Thursday with predictable results. The top-ranked Runnin’ Rebels routed the Aggies, 113-78.

What little success Utah State has had in the PCAA this season has largely been the result of its backcourt. Junior guard Kevin Nixon is averaging 17.7 points a game, with sophomore Reid Newey averaging 15.4.

Irvine opened the Bren Center a month ago with a 118-96 victory over the Aggies.
