Orange County College Basketball : Chapman Just Falls Short at Bakersfield, 99-91

Ryan Shaw scored 27 points and Jeff Hughes added 22 to lead Cal State Bakersfield to a 99-91 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory over Chapman Saturday.

The Roadrunners gained a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes on three-pointers by Shaw and Hughes and a basket and two free throws by Neal Stephens. Bakersfield led at halftime, 45-37, and never trailed thereafter.

Chapman pulled within two, 76-74, after Karl Tompkins hit a field goal with 5:41 left, but Bakersfield outscored the Panthers, 9-0, over the next 3 1/2 minutes. The Roadrunners’ last eight points came on free throws, as they connected on 23 of 25 from the foul line for the game (16 of 17 in the second half).

David Roth led the Panthers with 24 points. Jon Samuelson scored 20, including 16 in the second half, and Chris Perine scored 17.

The loss, the Panthers’ third straight, dropped them to 5-5 in conference and 12-12 overall. Bakersfield is 4-6 and 15-8.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Southern California College 71, Point Loma Nazarene 68--Randy Wynne scored 18 points and Rob Lucas added 17 as the Vanguards (5-3, 17-7) moved into a tie for second place in the conference with a victory over the first-place Crusaders (5-2, 17-8) at Southern California College. Steve Bruce had 22 points for Point Loma.

In the Western Christian Athletic Assn.:

Christ College Irvine 100, Arizona College of the Bible 90--Victor Townes scored 33 points and Brent Lindner added 18 to lead Christ College (5-6, 11-14) to the victory at Arizona. Gary Sharp scored 30 points for Arizona College of the Bible (7-5, 17-8).

In nonconference action:

Pacific Christian 92, Arizona Indian Bible 62--Ken Osmess and Randy Staton scored 18 points each to lead Pacific Christian to a nonconference victory in Arizona. Pacific Christian (14-13) led at halftime, 41-25. Aaron Williams led Arizona Indian Bible with 31 points.
