Ray Knight, a free agent, asked the Baltimore Orioles for two more days to consider their offer, believed to be $600,000, including $130,000 in performance incentives. Knight was paid $675,000 last season by the New York Mets, then rejected their offer of $800,000 after being voted the most valuable player in the World Series.
Knight asked for more time because he wanted to celebrate the victory by his wife, golfer Nancy Lopez, in the Sarasota LPGA tournament. Lopez’ 35th tour win qualified her for membership in the women’s golf Hall of Fame.
