Now that the Oscar race is officially off and chasing, we thought we’d take a final look at some of the more far-fetched Academy Award ad campaigns that were run in the trades as attempts to snare Oscar nominations. Among the critically unacclaimed works hyped were. . . .

“Pretty in Pink” for best pic--with its crop of teenies suggested for acting honors, and John Hughes for best screenplay.

“Poltergeist II: The Other Side” for best pic--with Craig T. Nelson for best actor, JoBeth Williams for best actress and a slew of performers mentioned for supporting awards, including little Heather O’Rourke.

“Short Circuit” for best picture.

Eddie Murphy for best actor for “Golden Child.”

For the longest stretch, Warner Bros. proposed “Cobra” for best picture and Sly Stallone for best actor. And Brigitte Nielsen for best actress.
