Pacific 10 Roundup : Arizona Bumps Oregon St. Out of Tie for Lead, 71-61

Tom Tolbert scored 23 points and Sean Elliott added 20 as Arizona beat Oregon State, 71-61, Saturday at Tucson to knock the Beavers out of a tie for first place with UCLA in the Pacific 10 Conference.

The Wildcats, 14-9 overall, 9-4 in conference play, led most of the game and broke it open with a 12-2 surge in the second half that began with a three-point shot by Craig McMillan with 12:05 left. That made Arizona’s lead 51-36, and before the rally ended with Elliott’s 10-foot jumper with 8:37 left, the Wildcats were in front, 60-38.

The Beavers (18-5, 10-4) rallied to within 68-59 on two free throws by Gary Payton with 1:39 left but could get no closer.

Payton and Jose Ortiz, who had nine rebounds, each scored 20 points for Oregon State. McMillan added 10 for Arizona.

Tolbert scored 13 points in each half and pulled down nine rebounds to help Anthony Cook, who had 10 rebounds for Arizona.

Arizona built a 38-26 halftime lead.

Washington 70, Stanford 65--Phil Zevenbergen scored scored 24 points, including 18 in the second half, as the Huskies downed the Cardinal at Seattle.

Zevenbergen, a 6-foot 10-inch senior forward, scored eight points as the Huskies (14-11, 8-6) took a 57-49 lead with seven minutes left.

The Cardinal (12-12, 6-9) narrowed the gap to one point with 3:40 left on a three-point basket by Terry Taylor, but the Huskies got a basket by Chris Welp on their next possession and widened their lead to seven points with less than a minute to play.

Washington led, 30-29, at halftime after coming from six points down with 2:26 left when Zevenbergen had a basket and two free throws.

Stanford’s Todd Lichti scored 11 of his 20 points in the first half.

Welp had 13 points and blocked 5 shots before fouling out with 2:23 left.
