Orange County College Baseball : Titans Hand Arizona First Loses

Cal State Fullerton handed Arizona its first losses of the season Saturday as the Titans swept a doubleheader, 7-6, 5-4, over the Wildcats on Titan Field. Both victories were in extra innings.

Fullerton relief pitcher Paul Johnson (2-0) won both games and Wildcat pitcher Wayne Gilles lost both games.

Arizona (9-2) led, 5-0, entering the eighth inning, when the Titans scored three runs. Tony Trevino drove in two runs with a double.

The Titans (3-5) scored two more runs in the ninth as Keith Cobb and Greg Mannion each drove in a run to force the game into extra innings. Arizona scored one in the 10th, but the Titans came back to score two and win the game.

Mannion had three hits in the first game, driving in a run and scoring a run.

In the second game, which was scheduled for only seven innings, Fullerton scored the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning.

Fullerton’s Jim Osborn reached base on an error and scored on a double by Mannion.

Arizona’s Steve Strong and Gary Alexander each hit home runs for the Wildcats.

Fullerton led, 4-3, in the seventh inning, but Arizona’s Pat Wade opened the inning with a triple and scored on a single by Chip Hale.

Mannion had three hits in the second game and drove in two runs.

Santa Clara 6, UC Irvine 4--The Broncos (6-3) scored four runs in the ninth inning to en route to a 6-4 victory over UC Irvine in a nonconference baseball game on Anteater Field.

The Broncos’ first four runners reached base in the inning and the winning run scored on an infield error by Anteater third baseman Mike Sugar. UC Irvine (4-7) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by Chris Gallego’s bases-loaded double. Irvine’s John Seeburger extended his hitting streak to seven games.

The Anteaters play Cal Poly San Luis Obispo today at 1 p.m. on Anteater Field.
