Newport Beach’s Nelson Wins Men’s 50 Title
Jim Nelson of Newport Beach upset King Van Nostrand of Brightwaters, N.Y., 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, Sunday to win the U.S. men’s 50 indoor singles tennis championship at the New Shrewsbury Racquet Club.
Nelson, 51, seeded seventh, won the national 45 indoor singles title in 1982 and has won 19 senior national doubles titles. Van Nostrand, 52, was seeded No. 2.
Nelson took a 3-0 lead in the third set, then fought off two break points in the fifth game. Nelson took the opening set with service breaks in the first and ninth games, and Van Nostrand, No. 1 in the 50s in 1984 and 1985, took the second set with a service break in the fifth game.
