N.Y. Express of the MISL Calls It Quits

Associated Press

The New York Express, founded by president-goalkeeper Shep Messing, folded Tuesday in its first season in the Major Indoor Soccer League and filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11.

The team had to draw upon its $250,000 letter of credit posted with the MISL to pay players after it failed to meet its Feb. 4 payroll.

The Express has lost about $3 million since it was granted entry into the league last June, according to published reports.

It was the fourth New York-based MISL team to go under since the inception of the league 8 1/2 years ago.

The Express, which had a 3-23 record and lost its first 13 games, had an average attendance of 5,135 at the Nassau Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.
