A 14-unit apartment complex under construction in Lemon Grove was destroyed by a fire late Tuesday, and San Diego sheriff’s fire investigators determined that arsonists were responsible for the blaze.

Sgt. Chris Key said firefighters responded to a call of a fire in the 8100 block of Broadway and found the complex engulfed in flames. Lemon Grove fire officials at the scene believed that the blaze was of suspicious origin and called the Sheriff’s Bomb Arson Unit.

After a preliminary investigation, fire investigators determined the fire was deliberately set. Damage to the structure was estimated to be about $100,000, Key said. No injuries were reported.
