Community College Roundup : Golden West Defeats OCC, 3-1

Steve Watson pitched an eight-hitter and Gary Renko hit a two-run home run in the third inning Wednesday to lead Golden West College to a 3-1 victory over Orange Coast in a nonconference baseball game at Costa Mesa.

Watson, a freshman left-hander, gave up a home run to OCC’s Ralph Ramirez in the fourth innings and also survived a ninth-inning rally. Manny Adams doubled to start the ninth, but Watson got J.J. Culpepper and Rex Peters to fly out and and Joey James to line out.

In women’s nonconference softball:

Cerritos 2, Rancho Santiago 1 (11 innings)--Pinch hitter Lylith Cook singled in the bottom of the 11th to drive in Sandy Barberie with the game’s winning run. Rancho Santiago (4-2) scored its only run in the first inning when Melanie Schuler singled to drive in Sandy Martinez, who had singled and stolen second.

Fullerton 2, Cypress 0--Fullerton pitcher Annette Gonzales (2-0) struck out eight and allowed one hit to lead the Hornets (2-0) at home. Fullerton got its first run on a home run by Christine Sison. Gonzales doubled to drive in Liz Cervantes for Fullerton’s second run.

Saddleback 6, Golden West 0--Patti Taylor (1-0) pitched a one-hitter and struck out six to lead the Gauchos (2-0) at Golden West. Kelly Decker was 2 for 4, with two doubles and two RBIs.

In men’s nonconference tennis:

Orange Coast 8, Golden West 1--Chris Ganz combined for wins in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to lead the Pirates (2-0). Ganz defeated Bill Hatfield, 6-2, 6-1, in singles, and teamed with John Gabrel to defeat Hatfield and Matt McCormick, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in doubles.
