Mary Joe Fernandez, a 15-year-old 10th-grader from Miami, upset fifth-seeded Pam Shriver, 6-3, 6-4, Thursday to advance to the third round of the $1.8-million International Players Championships.

Fernandez, who lost to Shriver, 6-2, 6-1, last week at Boca Raton, Fla., said she learned from the experience.

“It helped a lot,” she said. “I knew more or less what she was going to do.”

A disappointed Shriver said the best part of her game--her serve--abandoned her.

“Last week I could serve,” she said. “This week I not only couldn’t serve, I couldn’t throw the ball up straight. I don’t know why.”

In other matches, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert Lloyd and Stefan Edberg advanced, but eighth-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden was upset by Paolo Cane of Italy, 6-1, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.

The No. 1-seeded Navratilova beat Australia’s Anne Minter, 6-3, 6-1; No. 2 Lloyd defeated Japan’s Akiko Kijimuta, 6-1, 6-2, and Edberg, men’s No. 2, ousted Scott Davis, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.

Boris Becker withdrew Thursday with a stomach disorder. A doctor said he had “viral enteritis.”

Meanwhile, John McEnroe, who did not play singles because he had wisdom teeth pulled last week, was fined $1,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct during a doubles match.

McEnroe, playing with Matt Mitchell against Ivan Lendl and Bill Scanlon, faced up to $10,000 in fines after being cited for two conduct violations in a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 defeat.

The argument began when McEnroe, receiving Lendl’s serve in the third set, believed the ball had struck the net. No call was made, and McEnroe went into a tirade. He was cited for verbal abuse as well as unsportsmanlike conduct, although he was fined only for the latter offense. The fine was levied by Ken Farrar, supervisor for the Men’s International Professional Tennis Council, as well as Thomas Karlberg, also an MIPTC supervisor. McEnroe can appeal the fine.

After McEnroe finished, Lendl and Scanlon were awarded a penalty point, which gave them the third game.

“There’s not really much to talk about,” McEnroe said. “It was a good match. It was entertaining. I just wish the outcome would have been different.”
