They were physically tired from running. They were mentally tired from concentrating on pitching or hitting.

So, after two hours of a scheduled 2 1/2-hour workout Thursday, Manager Larry Bowa said: “That’s it.”

After 10 days of practice, the Padres were ready to play a game. Today in Yuma’s Desert Sun Stadium, the Padres open exhibition play against the Angels with a B game at 9 a.m. (PST) and an A game at noon.

San Diego’s B game lineup: Marvell Wynne, center field; Tim Flannery, second base; John Kruk, left field; Scott Parsons, first base; Shawn Abner, right field; Randy Asadoor, third base; Sandy Alomar Jr., catcher; Gary Green, shortstop and Ed Wojna, pitcher.

The A game lineup: Joey Cora, second base; Garry Templeton, shortstop; Tony Gwynn, right field; Kevin Mitchell, third base; Steve Garvey, first base; Carmelo Martinez, left field; Benito Santiago, catcher; James Steels, center field, and Andy Hawkins, pitcher.

Bowa said he will use the first five or six games to let players adjust. After that, serious evaluations must be made.

“We’re just looking at things, that’s all,” Bowa said. “Nothing is concrete or etched in stone yet. I have an idea what my lineup might be. It would be great to have one lineup and stick with it. But you have to make adjustments throughout the season because of slumps, injuries and some people not hitting as well against left- or right-handers.”

Bowa said pitchers will be limited to three innings in their first appearances. If any pitcher looks “effortless” in his first outing, Bowa said he might let him pitch four innings in his second game.

Also pitching in the A game will be Ed Vosberg and Craig Lefferts. Also pitching in the B game will be Candy Sierra and Rusty Ford. Saturday’s A game pitchers will be Storm Davis, Tom Gorman and Joe Bitker. Sunday’s pitchers will be Jimmy Jones, Dave Dravecky and Greg Booker.

Rookie outfielders Stanley Jefferson (soft tissue injury in his left wrist) and Shane Mack (five stitches in his right knee) will not play today. Both are expected to travel with the Padres when they leave for the Phoenix area after Sunday’s game.

“These guys with injuries will play to their own tolerance,” Bowa said. “It’s up to them. I would think if I were trying to win a spot, I would play with a little pain.”

The Padres have signed Jefferson and Santiago. Key unsigned players as of late Thursday were Mitchell and pitcher Lance McCullers.
