Times staff writer Steve Emmons compiled the Week in Review stories.

Lou Wiczai of Fountain Valley had a pretty good fish story to tell--about the fish that got away and good riddance.

The proof was there under the bandages on his left arm, severe cuts he suffered when attacked by a fish with the improbable name of a wahoo.

Wiczai, 71, was on the first day of a 16-day chartered fishing cruise from San Diego when the 60-pound fish, a member of the mackerel family and loaded with teeth, leaped 12 feet out of the water at an estimated 60 m.p.h. and took a bite out of Wiczai’s arm, which he had thrown over his face to protect it.

“All I thought was, ‘What a hell of a thing to happen,’ ” Wiczai said from his hospital bed at the San Diego Navy Hospital.

Perhaps even the wahoo would agree. “That old wahoo probably lost some of his dentures after he went back in the water,” Wiczai said.
