A fire of suspicious origin Sunday caused $15,000 damage and left a Santa Ana family of 10 homeless, authorities said.

The 10:15 a.m. fire in the 1600 block of West Cubbon Street was set at the rear of the single-family home, then burned into the house, up into the attic and into a bedroom, Santa Ana Fire Department Battalion Chief William Zastrow said.

The cause has not been determined, but Zastrow said the fire was under investigation as being of suspicious origin.

The blaze caused $10,000 damage to the structure and $5,000 to contents, he said. The three adults and seven children living there were referred to the American Red Cross for lodging until the house is habitable again, he said.
