The University of Washington and Stephen F. Austin were added to the field in the National Invitation Tournament after defending NCAA basketball champion Louisville turned down an NIT bid.
The announcement by tournament officials rounded out the 32-team field for the tournament, which begins Wednesday.
Louisville Coach Denny Crum said his players were split 50-50 on whether to go to the NIT after failing to get a bid to the NCAA tournament.
“The coaches felt if it was not a unanimous decision by the players, we would not be able to do our best,” said Crum, whose team finished the season with an 18-14 record.
