Payne Stewart, frequently a challenger and rarely a winner, shot an eight-under-par 63 Saturday for a one-stroke lead in the third round of the $600,000 Bay Hill golf tournament at Orlando, Fla.
Stewart, nine times a runner-up since his last win in 1983, completed three trips over Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club course in 199.
David Frost, the South African who held the second-round lead, did not make a bogey, shot a 66 and saw Stewart storm right past him.
His long, par-saving putt on the 18th hole gave him a 200 total.
It appeared to be a two-man race going into today’s final round.
“Unless they have minor heart failure tomorrow, they’ll be hard to catch,” said Dan Pohl, who shot a 65 and was tied for third with Curtis Strange, who had a 68.
Billy Casper birdied four of his last seven holes to catch Miller Barber and share the second-round lead of the $200,000 Senior tournament at Sun City West, Ariz.
Casper shot a seven-under-par 65, Barber had a 68, and they were tied at 133.
Bob Charles, whose 64 tied a course record Friday, had a 70 and was one shot off the pace.
