San Diego College Baseball : 26-1 Win Finishes a Sweep by UCSD

Glen Turnipseed had five hits, including a home run, and Bob Natal drove in six runs Saturday to lead UC San Diego to a 26-1 victory and a sweep of a nonconference doubleheader against Christ College of Irvine at UCSD.

The Tritons (12-8) won the first game, 4-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Mike Morgan.

UCSD, which had 25 hits in the second game, came within one run of tying the school record for runs in one game, set last season against La Verne. UCSD scored 10 runs in the third inning.

Brian Rude added a two-run home run for UCSD in a six-run eighth inning. Natal was 4 for 5, and Kevin Willet had four hits and three RBIs. Kyle Abbott (2-1) picked up the victory.

Point Loma Nazarene 3-2, Westmont 2-8--Kent Madsen had three hits and Westmont took advantage of six Point Loma Nazarene errors to win the second game and gain a split of the NAIA Division III doubleheader at Santa Barbara. Point Loma won the first game on the strength of Steve Wainwright’s two-run home run in the top of the sixth. Larry Johnson pitched a complete-game five-hitter in the first game for Point Loma (7-12).

United States International 15, Cal State Long Beach 12--Steve Hendricks hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs to lead the Gulls to the victory at Long Beach. John Ronis added three RBIs for USIU. Sean Rydell pitched three innings in relief for the victory.
