NCAA Women’s Roundup : Top-Ranked Texas Routs St. Joseph’s, 86-56

Clarissa Davis scored 24 points to lead No. 1-ranked Texas to an 86-56 rout of St. Joseph’s Sunday at Austin, Tex., in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

The second-round victory improved the Longhorns’ record to 29-1 and moved the defending national champions into the East Regional semifinals Thursday at Fayetteville, N.C.

They’ll face James Madison, which beat Vanderbilt, 68-60, Sunday at Harrisonburg, Va.

Davis made 10 of 15 shots and scored 11 points during a 14-4 second-half run that increased the Longhorns’ lead to 67-37 with 7:55 left.

Beverly Williams added 15 points for Texas, and Yulonda Wimbish scored 13.

St. Joseph’s (23-9) was led by Teresa Carmichael, who scored 23.

James Madison 68, Vanderbilt 60--Sydney Beasley had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Dukes in the East Regional second-round game at Harrisonburg, Va.

James Madison (27-3) never trailed after opening a 29-27 lead in the first half. Alisa Harris scored 14 points for the Dukes.

Vanderbilt (23-10) got 22 points from Carolyn Peck. Karen Booker added 15 points and 17 rebounds.

Tennessee 95, Tennessee Tech 59--Bridgette Gordon scored 23 points and Tonya Edwards scored 8 of her 18 points in the first four minutes as the seventh-ranked Lady Vols raced to a 15-2 lead and romped in the Mideast Regional second-round game at Knoxville, Tenn.

Edwards, a freshman guard making her first start, made 8 of 14 shots and had 7 assists.

Gordon came off the bench to make 8 of 12 shots as the Lady Vols (24-6) moved into the regional semifinals Thursday at Knoxville.

Cheryl Taylor led Tennessee Tech (24-7) with 34 points, including 23 in the second half.

Virginia 76, Memphis State 75--Junior guard Donna Holt hit a 15-foot jumper with 13 seconds left to lift the Cavaliers to the win in the Mideast Regional second-round game at Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia (26-4) made up an eight-point deficit in the last 9:21, putting together a 14-2 run to take a 72-68 lead with 2:29 left.

Connie Hibbler scored 22 points for Memphis State (20-9), and Wanda Dillard added 19.

Iowa 68, New Orleans 46--The Hawkeyes romped to their 12th straight win, getting 17 points from Lisa Long and 14 from Franthea Price in the Midwest Regional second-round game at Iowa City, Iowa.

Iowa (25-4) never led by less than six points in the second half and scored the game’s final 13 points. New Orleans (25-7) got 18 points from Sandy Woodson.

Southern Illinois 70, Louisiana State 56--Dana Fitzpatrick scored 22 points as the 16th-ranked Salukis beat the 14th-ranked Tigers in a Midwest Regional second-round game at Baton Rouge, La.

Southern Illinois (28-8) increased a four-point halftime lead by making 15 of 21 shots in the second half to advance to the regional semifinals Thursday night at Monroe, La., where the Gateway Conference champions will meet third-ranked Louisiana Tech.

LSU (20-8) got 17 points and 15 rebounds from Lesa Thornton.
