Local News in Brief : Arson Hits Van Nuys Drug-Treatment Clinic
Arson damaged a drug and alcohol treatment center in Van Nuys Monday, the Los Angeles City Fire Department said Tuesday.
The fire caused about $22,700 in damage to the Inter-Agency Drug Abuse Recovery Programs outpatient clinic at 6622 Van Nuys Blvd., Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said.
The one-story clinic was apparently empty when the fire started shortly before 5 a.m. Monday near the rear of the building, Wells said. Investigators did not disclose how they concluded that arson was involved.
No arrests were made, and no suspects have been identified, Wells said.
The clinic is one of four operated by the nonprofit drug agency, which is supported by private donations, fees and county funds, said Jay Cavanaugh, president of the agency’s board of directors.
The clinics, which also are in Reseda, Newhall and Santa Monica, provide family and group counseling for drug and alcohol abusers, Cavanaugh said. The Van Nuys clinic, which served about 100 adult patients, will now move, Cavanaugh said.
