County Assessor John Lynch and Auditor-Controller Mark Bloodgood reached an agreement that will permit an audit of Lynch’s office to resume May 4. Bloodgood had said that Lynch vowed last week to fight the resumption of the audit, even if it meant going to the U.S. Supreme Court. Bloodgood’s staff had begun the audit in February, 1986--10 months before Lynch succeeded Alexander Pope as assessor. Lynch issued a statement that “My concern was that the audit, dealing with the Pope administration, not impede my efforts to put in place a comprehensive and more publicly responsive operation.” Supervisor Deane Dana, who endorsed Lynch’s election, said that he encouraged the new assessor to allow resumption of the audit. Lynch ordered Bloodgood’s auditors out of the assessor’s office last Dec. 10, promising the audit could resume after the office had been reorganized.
