INDIANAPOLIS — Betsy Mitchell won the 200-yard individual medley and swam on two winning relay teams Thursday to help three-time defending champion Texas to a first-round lead at the NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships.
Texas was the first-round leader with 212 points, followed by Stanford at 170. Florida was in third place at 116. Texas led after every event of the meet, which continues today and Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium.
The Longhorns set a U.S. open record in the 200-yard medley relay. Mitchell, Tracey McFarlane, Jodi Eyles and Ann Drolsom won in 1:39.88. They broke the mark of 1:40.22 set by Stanford in last year’s NCAA final.
