Transient in Alley Run Over by Truck
A transient was seriously injured when he was run over by a garbage truck while sleeping in an alley near downtown Los Angeles early Monday, authorities said.
Francisco Olivas, 34, was run over by the 30,000-pound truck while sleeping on a makeshift bed in a narrow alley at 7th and Alvarado streets, Officer Doug Iversen said.
The 12-foot-wide truck, operated by a private trash company, had entered the 18-foot-wide alley to empty a trash dumpster, Iversen said.
The truck’s wheels rolled across Olivas’ body, fracturing his left ankle, crushing his pelvis and causing massive internal injuries, Iversen said. He was in stable condition at County-USC Medical Center.
Olivas told hospital authorities he sold ice cream from a pushcart for a living.
