San Diego’s Egan Interviews for Nevada Reno Coaching Job

Share

Officials at Nevada Reno confirmed Monday that Hank Egan, the University of San Diego basketball coach, interviewed for the vacant head basketball coaching job Sunday.

Egan, 49, who led USD to the school’s best record (24-6) this season, said Monday that he went to Reno over the weekend.

“I went up there to discuss the position with the people,” Egan said. “Right now, there’s nothing going on. Nothing at all. The people (at Nevada Reno) asked me to come to town. I’m not doing this because of any dissatisfaction (at USD). When people approach you about something, I think you should at least listen.”

The Nevada Reno coaching job became vacant two weeks ago when Sonny Allen resigned. Bill Berry, San Jose State coach, was rumored to be the leading candidate, but he withdrew on Monday.

Before Egan was interviewed Sunday, Nevada Reno interviewed Idaho State Coach Jim Boutin. Former Marquette coach and Milwaukee Buck assistant Rick Majerus was interviewed late Monday night, school officials said.

Chris Ault, Nevada Reno athletic director, is expected to make a decision on a new coach sometime late this week or early next, according to school officials. He may also interview two more applicants later this week.

Nevada Reno was 15-15 this season and advanced to the Big Sky tournament final before losing to Idaho State. The Wolfpack will return three starters next season.

USD, the West Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion, lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Auburn in this, Egan’s third year as coach. The Toreros will lose four starters next season.
