Cal State Fullerton’s men’s gymnastics team finished second Friday in the Pacific 10 Gymnastics Invitational at Stanford University. The Titans, who scored 282.05 points to New Mexico’s 282.40, also qualified five gymnasts for today’s individual championships.

Bill Barham and Li Xiao Ping each qualified for three events--Barham in the pommel horse, high bar and vault, and Ping in the pommel horse, rings and parallel bars. Eli Rodriguez qualified in the high bar and vault. Ric Draghi qualified in the vault, and Kenny Johnson qualified in the floor exercises.

The top eight finishers in each event advanced to the individual championships.

In women’s softball:

Cal State Fullerton 2, Fresno State 1--The Bulldogs made two errors on a ground ball in the sixth inning to let the winning run score for the No. 1-ranked Titans in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Fullerton. The second game was rained out.

Carey Hess, from Loara High School, scored the winning run for Fullerton (7-0, 30-2) in the sixth when Cathy Hall hit a ground ball that went through the legs of second baseman Cathy Mayer and was misplayed in right field by Karen Richter.

Connie Clark (17-0) struck out eight and gave up four hits and one unearned run.

Fresno State (6-3, 24-8), ranked eighth in the nation, tied the score in the fourth inning when Richter singled in Mayer, who had reached base on an error on Titan shortstop Charis Monroe.

In men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, UC San Diego 4--Julian Barham and Steve Oliver, the No. 2 doubles team for the Anteaters (20-9), defeated Jim McNamee and J.R. Edwards, 6-1, 6-1, at Irvine. UC Irvine, ranked 17th in the nation, won four of the six singles matches.

Chapman 6, Cal State L.A. 0--The Panthers swept the singles matches at Cal State Los Angeles. The doubles were not played because of cold and wind.

Chapman’s No. 1 singles’ player, Miles Walker, led with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Rich Soleto.

The victory was the seventh in a row for Chapman (14-7, 7-0 in the CCAA), the second-ranked team in Division II.
