Dag Wennlund of the University of Texas established a 1987 world best in the javelin Saturday with a throw of 271 feet 1 inch to win the event at the Texas Relays in Austin, Tex.

Wennlund, a native of Sweden, also broke his own Texas Relays record of 257-11 and the Swedish national record of 268 feet.

The world record for the javelin, which was re-designed last year to reduce the distance it travels, is 281-3 by Klaus Tafelmeier of West Germany. Wennlund’s throw was the sixth-best ever with the new, blunter javelin.

TCU’s 400-meter relay team won its sixth straight major title, adding the Texas Relays crown to the Florida Relays this year and the Texas Relays, Penn Relays, Southwest Conference outdoor and NCAA outdoor championships in 1986.

The Horned Frogs finished in 39.13 seconds, followed by Texas A&M; in 39.54 and Baylor in 39.88.

NCAA indoor champion Andre Ester of Northeastern Louisiana won the long jump at 27-7, more than a foot longer than Carl Lewis’ relays record of 26-6 1/2. But a 3.3 meters-per-second wind, over the allowable of 2 m.p.s., kept the jump from being recognized.

Home-state favorite Billy Olson only made one of his seven attempts in the invitational pole vault, but his leap of 18-2 was good enough to outdistance a field that included old rival Joe Dial.

Gail Devers of UCLA won the women’s 100 meters in 11.33 and the 400 meters in 52.66 in the Fresno Relays at Ratcliffe Stadium in Fresno.

Innocent Egnubike of Nigeria, formerly of Azusa Pacific, took the men’s 400 meters in 45.54. Former USC star Tonie Campbell won the 110-meter high hurdles in a wind-aided 13.34.
